Hey Wonder Woman, You're Crushing It: Encouragement and Tips for the One-Woman Show
JUNE 12, 2024 | ENTREPRENEURSHIP | BY MYLA SAAVEDRA
I've been on this entrepreneurial journey since 2016, and let me tell you, I've flown solo 99.9% of the way. At some point, I hired a VA, and it was a game-changer for many reasons. I believe every entrepreneur should consider hiring a VA when the time is right for their business, but that’s a topic for another day.
Instead, my focus today is on you—fellow female entrepreneur tirelessly building your dream without a team to support you.
I understand the challenges you're facing. I've been there: the financial strain that makes hiring help a distant dream, the doubt and questions from loved ones, and the daunting fear of pursuing a vision with no tangible proof of success... not immediately anyway.
My courageous friend, I see you.
I see your late nights and early mornings, squeezing extra hours out of your day. I see you as a one-woman powerhouse, juggling countless tasks, wearing all the hats, and weathering every storm. Your commitment and resilience are nothing short of amazing.
We've heard it many times: "Entrepreneurship is NOT for the faint of heart." It demands grit, determination, resilience, and an abundance of passion. But doing it alone? That's a whole new level of courage and fortitude.
Yet, here you are, exemplifying that bravery every single day. You push through obstacles and show up for your dreams again and again. So when doubt creeps in, I want you to hold onto this truth: you have everything within you to succeed.
Today, I want to share some encouragement and practical advice to help you in your journey. I hope that these insights not only fuel your business but also enrich your personal life. So, grab your favorite cup of tea or coffee, and let’s have a heart-to-heart. ☕️
First things first, let’s celebrate you. Yes, YOU! It’s easy to get caught up in what still needs to be done and forget to acknowledge what you’ve already achieved.
Did you publish that story on Instagram? Fantastic!
Did you launch your website? Give yourself a huge pat on the back!
Did you make your first sale? Pop that confetti, girl—this is monumental!
Every step you take, no matter how small it may seem, is a victory. Your journey is built on these small yet significant moments. Each one is a testament to your dedication, resilience, and hard work. So, take a breath, acknowledge these milestones, and revel in them.
You’re not just progressing; you’re conquering new ground. Celebrate your victories daily, and let them fuel your spirit because YOU TRULY DESERVE IT.
I’ve heard so many women entrepreneurs, especially moms, say they don’t have time for self-pampering or self-care in any form because, outside of work, their priority is their family—their spouse and kids. But let me remind you, my friend: taking care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually is the best gift you could give to them and to yourself.
Why? Because your well-being is the foundation upon which your family's happiness and stability are built. When you’re drained, stressed, or running on empty, it affects not just you but everyone around you. Conversely, when you prioritize your own health and happiness, you bring more energy, patience, and love into your home.
By taking care of yourself, you become a more present, joyful, and effective mom, partner, and woman. You model the importance of self-love and resilience, teaching your family that:
Self-care is essential, not optional.
Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.
Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. So, fill your cup first, and watch how much more you can pour into the lives of those you love. Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s a crucial part of being the best version of you—for them and for you.
So, prioritize self-care. Schedule regular breaks, treat yourself to a nice walk, indulge in a hobby you love, or simply relax with a good book at the end of the day. When you feel good, you’re more productive, creative, and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.
One of the perks of being your own boss is the flexibility to create a schedule that suits your life. Embrace that freedom! Design a daily routine that aligns with your peak productivity times. If you’re a morning person, tackle the most important tasks first thing. If you’re a night owl, structure your day to allow for those late-night bursts of creativity. Listen to your body and find a rhythm that keeps you energized and focused.
Remember, the goal is to build a business that complements your life, not to rearrange your personal life to suit your business. I understand that sometimes the demands of running a business can clash with the needs of our personal lives. It's easy to feel overwhelmed by the elusive idea of achieving that perfect work-life balance. But let’s bust that myth right now: there’s no such thing as a perfectly even distribution of time, attention, and importance across all areas of your life and business. In the words of the great Billy Joel, "It's just a fantasy (oh-oh-oh-oh), it's not the real thing." And to continue to chase that fantasy is what's going to burn you out and break your heart.
What is realistic and attainable is finding a harmonious compromise.
Embrace the concept of a dynamic balance—one that allows you to adjust and adapt as needed. Be willing to find stopping points throughout your day, where you can transition from work mode to enjoying coffee with a loved one. Master the art of delegation and automation to lighten your load.
Above all, stay true to your values. When you know your non-negotiables, it becomes much easier to grant yourself the flexibility to adjust the rest.
Cherish the journey, trust in your ability to navigate it, and give yourself the grace to blend work and life in a way that nourishes both.
When your business is your baby, it’s tempting to be available 24/7. But clear boundaries are crucial for maintaining your sanity. Define your working hours and stick to them. Let clients and customers know when you’re available, and don’t be afraid to unplug and enjoy your personal time. You’ll come back to your work feeling refreshed and more productive.
You don't have to say "yes" to every networking invitation or speaking opportunity that comes your way. Not all opportunities are the right fit, even if they seem promising at first glance. It’s essential to consider the timing—not just whether there's an open slot in your calendar, but whether this opportunity aligns with the current needs and goals of your business.
Remember, it’s perfectly okay to decline or delay an opportunity if the timing isn’t right. This isn’t about procrastination or waiting for a perfect moment. It’s about being strategic and intentional.
When in doubt, responding with "No, thanks" or "Let me think about it and get back to you" can be your go-to stress-free default. This approach allows you to maintain focus on what truly matters for your business and life right now, ensuring that you invest your time and energy wisely.
You can’t do it all, and that’s perfectly okay. Learn to say no to tasks, projects, or commitments that don’t align with your goals or values. Remember, every time you say no to something that’s not essential, you’re saying yes to something that truly matters. Protect your time and energy for the things that will move your business forward.
Being a one-woman team can sometimes feel isolating, but you’re not alone. Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow entrepreneurs. Join online groups, attend virtual networking events, and build connections with like-minded women who understand your journey. Sharing experiences, challenges, and victories with others can provide invaluable support and inspiration.
Just as you strive to enrich the lives of others, someone out there is meant to do the same for you. Make space for that beautiful exchange of positive energy.
The entrepreneurial journey is one of constant growth and learning. Stay curious and open to new ideas. Invest in courses, read books, listen to podcasts, and seek out mentors who can help you sharpen your skills and expand your knowledge. The more you learn, the more confident and capable you’ll become.
But here's a vital piece of advice: don't fall into the trap of simply acquiring information without implementing it. Knowledge without action can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stagnant. Make it a habit to put what you learn into practice. Before you invest in another program, buy another book, or subscribe to another podcast, ensure you’ve acted on at least one lesson from your current learning materials. Aim to implement one new idea or strategy each week. This approach will keep you moving forward and prevent the dreaded information overload.
As your business grows, you’ll eventually reach a point where you can’t do everything on your own. This is a good thing! It’s a sign that your hard work is paying off and taking you to the next level of growth and evolution.
Hiring a virtual assistant (VA) or another team member can free up your time for creative work and personal care. Delegating tasks allows you to focus on scaling your business and spending quality time with your loved ones.
Being a solo entrepreneur doesn't need to be a permanent thing. While it’s tempting to wear the “solopreneur” badge with pride—reveling in the notion that we’ve achieved success entirely on our own—does that really make the victory sweeter? In truth, no one reaches the finish line alone. We all benefit from the support, wisdom, and assistance of others.
Think of being a 'solopreneur' as a phase in your business journey. Starting solo helps you keep costs low while building a solid foundation. But as you grow, make it a goal to delegate some of the workload. Embracing the strength of a team not only fuels growth but also helps you maintain a "harmonious compromise" between your work and personal life, helping you achieve a greater sense of fulfillment in both.
Remember, seeking help isn’t a sign of weakness, but a strategic move that paves the way for greater achievements.
Dear one-woman wonder, you’re doing an amazing job. Balancing all the responsibilities of running an online business on your own is no small feat, but you’re handling it with grace and strength. Keep celebrating your wins, taking care of yourself, and trusting in your abilities.
After eight years in the business, I can honestly say I didn’t get here all on my own—and I wouldn't have a full head of hair still intact without the incredible help, guidance, and support from those around me. Believe me, solo might be catchy in a song, but in business, it's not how it works. It's all about collaboration, trust, and embracing vulnerability.
So, whenever you feel like you're on a deserted island, remember this: you’ve got an entire community cheering you on. We're all in this together, even if it's just to remind you to take a break or celebrate a little victory. Here’s to thriving together!
Take a few minutes today to write down three things you’ve accomplished recently, no matter how small they may seem. Reflect on how far you’ve come and give yourself a pat on the back. Then, choose one self-care activity to treat yourself to this week. You deserve it!

You don't have to do it all yourself. You have to do the part that's most important and delegate the rest. ~ Howard Schultz
